The Olympic Games Rio 2016

The 35 best (plus equal scores) from the three previous individual qualifiers got to jump in Friday's final at the Olympic Games, and here are some of the thrills and spills that unfolded in Rio. First out Maikel van der Vleuten's Verdi that made his trademark buck over the finish line. All photos (c) Jenny Abrahamsson.

So unlucky: Harrie Smolders and Emerald had the very first fence down, but were clear for the rest... and qualified for the second round. Harrie decided not to jump the second round though.

Cry me a river... Jeroen Dubbeldam and Zenith did a fantastic Games with only one foot in the water as their mistake. In the second round of the individual final however, luck was not on their side and the pair ended 0,02 seconds on the wrong side of the time allowed which prevented them from the jump-off for a medal.

A happy groom and a happy Chef d'Equipe when Steve Guerdat and Nino du Buissonnets cleared the course.

Carlo with his ears pricked as always! He jumped an amazing clear in the first round with Sergio Alvarez Moya.

Sheikh Ali Al Thani performed outstanding with First Devision to go clear in both rounds of the individual final and reaching the jump-off, where two poles fell.

These two impressed all the way through: French reserve rider Philippe Rozier and Rahotep de Toscane that had to step in on the French team in the last minute.

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Fibonacci had to step in on the German team on the day the competitions began in Rio. They contributed to a German bronze team medal, but after a misunderstanding on the first fence during round one of the individual final Meredith withdrew her friend and their Olympics ended.

Several horses looked a bit tired on the last day in Rio, and Azur was one of them. But, she still fought; ending with only four faults in the first round.

Kent Farrington and Voyeur delivered two beautiful clears to move on to the six-horse jump-off, where they unfortunately ended with two down and no medal.

So did these two - Peder Fredricson and All In. In the end this pair was the only one being clear on the fences over all six tracks!
