Smolders kicks off CHI Geneva with a speedy win

The prestigious five-star event CHI Geneva kicked off on Thursday, and the main class of the day was the 1.55m Credit Suisse Geneva Classic that went to Harrie Smolders (NED). Out of a starter field of 52 horse-and-rider combinations, it was Harrie Smolders on the 13-year-old gelding Zinius (Nabab de Reve x Kannan) that clocked the winning time of 61,28 seconds. ”Zinius is very competitive, but the class today was a real challenge," Harrie said afterwards. ”For being the first day, it was a big class and the field of horses and riders here is very strong. I am very proud of Zinius for being able to win this class," he went on. ”I have had him for about a year now, and he has been very consistent and has been winning a lot. In the last few months he has started to feel consistent also on a higher level," Harrie said about his winning mount. 

Abdel Said (EGY) on the 10-year-old mare Hope van Scherpen Donder (Quadrillo x Balou du Rouet) had to settle for the runner-up position after holding the lead for a very long time with 61,35 seconds, that he clocked as rider number nine in the ring. Laura Kraut (USA) on the 11-year-old gelding Deauville S (Diamant de Semilly x Lux Z) took the third spot with a time of 62,89 seconds, and Gregory Wathelet (BEL) on the 13-year-old stallion Eldorado van het Vijverhof (Thunder van de Zuuthoeve x Omar) placed fourth with a time of 63,00. Fifth place went to Jérôme Guery (BEL) on the 11-year-old stallion Garfield de Tij Des Templiers (Quasimodo Z x Goldspring de Lauzelle) after the pair clocked a time of 63,47 seconds. 

Earlier during the day the 1.40m Prix du Léman went to Roger Yves Bost (FRA) on the 10-year-old gelding Tesway de la Batia (Calvaro x If de Merze). The pair had the winning time of 56,84 seconds, while Alain Jufer (SUI) on Casall (Casall x Cantus) had to settle for second spot with a time of 57,52. Bryan Balsiger (SUI) on Ak’s Courage (Chepetto C x Lennon 5) took the third spot with a time of 58,82, Pius Schwizer (SUI) on Chidame Z (Chippendale Z x Quidam de Revel) placed fourth with a time of 59,16 seconds and Anthony Bourquard (SUI) on Indiana des Abattes CH (Ishan x Gloum) took the fifth spot with a time of 59,30. 

The 1.45m Prix des Vins de Genève ended with a victory for Benoit Cernin (FRA) on Unamour du Suyer (Calvaro x Quidam de Revel) with a time of 55,99 seconds. Laura Kraut (USA) on Viper Vroumbautshoeve Z (Verdi) took the runner-up position with a time of 56,09, while Michael Jung (GER) on Fischerchelsea (Check In x Argent) placed third with a time of 56,89. Werner Muff (SUI) on Cosby (Contendro I x Landadel) took the fourth place with a time of 57,14, and the fifth spot went to Daniel Etter (SUI) on Kheops du Roset CH (Kannan x Mistersman) after the pair clocked a time of 57,51 seconds.
