The 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival kicked off this week, but got a sad start as Catherine Tyree’s horse Free Style VH Polderhof collapsed and died in the ring.

The American rider and the 11-year old mare by Kashmir van't Schuttershof x Chatman were competing in the 1.45 competition in the International Ring, where they had finished the first round of the competition and were walking to start their jump-off when Free Style VH Polderhof collapsed.

The Winter Equestrian Festival released the following statement regarding the incident:

“On Thursday, Jan. 14, at approximately 8:45 a.m., Free Style VH Polderhof, ridden by Catherine Tyree and owned by Mary and Joe Tyree, collapsed and died in the International Ring at the Winter Equestrian Festival at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. They were competing in class 1003, the 1.45m jumpers, and had finished their first round. As they prepared to go into their jump-off round, Free Style collapsed while [she] was walking. Equine and human emergency crews were at their side immediately and the horse was transported from the ring in the equine ambulance. Ms. Tyree was taken to the hospital with a leg injury.”

Free Style VH Polderhof had competed at 1.50/1.60 level with Tyree during the 2015 autumn season, and was before that seen under Daniel Deusser.

Our thoughts go out to Tyree and her team.
