It looked to be a back-to-back win for Brazil’s Marlon Zanotelli, until Ukraine’s Cassio Rivetti showed all the competitors a clean pair of heels in the CSI3* Grand Prix of Indoor Drachten. Aboard his 11-year-old mare Chataga (Chacco Blue x Carthago), Cassio Rivetti gave it all on the last line, finishing on 39.41 seconds and taking home the top prize money of 21.450 euro.

Last week, Marlon Zanotelli and Madame Butterfly (Corrado I x Lavall II) turned out to be unbeatable –  but this week his friend Cassio Rivetti bested him on Chataga. Zanotteli became the runner-up with the extremely talented 9-year-old Casper 297 (Lazio x Quidam’s Rubin) finishing on 39.76 seconds. “We are good friends, but in the jump-off, I try to beat everyone,” Cassio Rivetti smiled afterwards about beating his friend. “I was last to go, so I gave everything.”

A star studded field of riders were competing in the Grand Prix of Provincie Fryslân in Drachten, including reigning European and World Champion Jeroen Dubbeldam, his teammates Maikel van der Vleuten and Jur Vrieling and acclaimed riders like Willem Greve, Marcus Ehning and Lorenzo De Luca. A wonderful number of 11 combinations qualified for the jump-off over a big, but mostly technical course, in which all the fences followed very quick.

The Dutch riders Sander Geerink, Johnny Pals and Remco Been started off in the jump-off – all finishing on spectacular times but knocking one fence down each. Belgium’s Annelies Vorsselmans gave it a serious try with the just 9-year-old Hermes de Mariposa (Canturo x Power Light) – half-brother to Pénélope Leprévost’s Flora de Mariposa. Vorsselmans finished on 41.51 seconds, eventually ending fifth.

After Dutch rider Jur Vrieling took the lead on his rising star Glasgow van ‘t Merelnest (Nabab de Rêve x Darco), it was time for last year’s winner Willem Greve to give it a shot. Aboard his brilliant stallion Carambole N.O.P. (Cassini x Concerto II), Greve choose a spectacular approach to the penultimate fence – but due to the smallest hesitation from his loyal stallion the risk took its toll and resulted in a knockdown.

Marlon Zanotelli grabbed his chance to take the lead and turned out to be undefeatable for the stylish top rider Marcus Ehning and Kaya Lüthi’s former ride Pret A Tout (Hiram Chambertin x Stew Boy) that slotted in behind the Brazilian rider.

As last to go, Cassio Rivetti entered the arena and started off his jump-off with the luck on his side. The top-rail of the third fence bounced up and down, but fell straight in the cups again. Due to this slight interruption, Cassio lost a little bit of rhythm towards the combination but from the moment he landed after the combination until the moment he passed the finish line all Cassio did was speeding up his mare Chataga. “After the double, I just had to go. I really went for it on the last line, I was a little long, but my mare was fighting for it and jumped clear. Today was my day!” Cassio referred also to his win with Beau Limit (No Limit x Hors la Loi II) earlier this morning in the 1.40m Small Tour Final.
