Horse & Hound, Britain’s foremost equestrian weekly magazine and website, has announced Nick Skelton as the winner of its prestigious Lifetime Achievement accolade at its inaugural awards. The Rio Olympic Gold medallist attended the exclusive awards ceremony hosted at Ascot racecourse on Thursday 3rd November to collect the award in person.

The showjumper has inspired generations during his career over the past four decades and is one of the most decorated British riders. Aged 58, he nursed his horse Big Star back to health and got back in the saddle following a broken neck and hip replacement to fulfil a lifelong goal of winning individual Olympic gold — his incredible story making him a deserving winner.

Accepting the award, Nick said: “It’s amazing to be receiving this award. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. It’s been a long road. There are so many people to thank for me standing here. Owners, horses, riders, grooms, vets and blacksmiths."

“Obviously, the highlight was 10 weeks ago [winning individual gold in Rio]; to do that was a dream, and to have a horse like [Big Star] makes life a lot easier! He's had his ups and downs and breakages, and came back. He’s an amazing horse and without him, I wouldn’t be standing here.”

Ten awards, including Nick’s, were both nominated and voted for by the public.

Sarah Jenkins, content director, adds: “Huge congratulations to all of our winners, particularly Lifetime Achievement award winner Nick Skelton who has inspired several generations with his dedication and success. Seeing what Nick's peers and family had to say about him as a man as well as an athlete was a particularly moving part of the evening - none of which would have been possible of course without our sponsor's generosity and the Horse & Hound team's tireless efforts.”
