World of Showjumping’s new series ‘That Special Bond’ continues. We talk with some of the top names of the sport, to discuss the horses that have shaped their careers, fulfilled their dreams – and sometimes even broken hearts.

This time it is Philipp Weishaupt, the German rider who won the CSIO5* Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen this summer on his white stallion LB Convall, who tells us about his ‘Special One’, ‘The Moneymaker’ and ‘The One That Got away’. Or maybe in Weishaupt’s case, it was more about the dream that slipped…

The Special One

“The Special One for me is for sure Monte Bellini (Montender x Ramiro),” Philipp says. “I had him for a long time – he won the Bundeschampionat as a 5-year-old with Marco (Kutscher) – and I took him over when he was a 6-years-old. He was just a complete horse, he had all it takes to be a winner; he had he scope, the quality and the carefulness. I only needed a normal bit and boots – and he could jump every fence in the world. He has a super character. Even if he had a long break, he never forgot what to do in the ring; I could just put a saddle on him and go again. I think our biggest win for me was the Grand Prix at CHIO5* Rotterdam in 2013, when we also won the Nations Cup there with the German team. Now that he is retired from the sport, he is only breeding and I am happy that I can still see him when I want to.”

The Money Maker

“The Money Maker is difficult to name. LB Convall (Colman x Cascavelle) won a lot in a short time, as did Catoki (Cambridge x Silvester). But I think if I have to point towards only one horse, I would have to go for Souvenir (Stakkato x Lemon xx). She is a tiny mare, and she always gave me more than she actually could. She tried her hardest every time we entered the ring. I won countless of speed classes with her, as well as five-star Grand Prix classes and Nations Cups. Souvenir is retired now, and she has got a foal by Monte Bellini – which I think is fantastic.”

The One That Got Away

“The One That Got Away is also Monte Bellini. It is not because he was sold, it is more about the dreams that I lost with him…,” Philipp says. “For the 2012 Olympics in London we were named for the German team. I was of course super excited about this, it is a dream for any rider to get to ride for their country at the Games. However, just before the Olympics Monte got injured and we could not go. I was devastated. With the help of time we got him back going again, and we were named for another German Championship squad – for the Europeans in Herning in 2013. But just like the year before, Monte got injured and we could not go. Horses getting injured like this is a part of the sport, but those moments have been very difficult,” Weishaupt closes off.
