Close-Up

Ensor de Litrange LXII (Nabab de Reve x Mr. Blue) has been one of the horses catapulting Lorenzo De Luca into showjumping fame, with Grand Prix wins in Dublin, Shanghai and Wellington as well as Nations Cup victories in Dublin and Rome.

“I started with him at the beginning of 2016. It was a challenge because he was ridden by Jos Lansink before, and I was not sure if he would suit me,” De Luca says about the 13-year-old gelding. “I understood straight away how sensitive he is – you would not think so since he is such a big horse, but he is really sensitive so I took my time with him.

“I only jumped 1,40-1,45 classes in the beginning during the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington. The first Grand Prix I jumped there with him he won, so that was a great start. Step by step it all started to fall into place, as I got to know him better and better. He is now the number one in my stable and he is amazing.”

According to De Luca, Ensor has a sweet character and in the ring he has all the scope carefulness needed. “He has a bit of a special technique, but I never tried to change him,” De Luca says. “It works out well so I have let him be how he is.”

About Ensor’s likes and dislikes, De Luca says: “All my horses are a bit spoiled with candy, so of course he also loves candy. What he doesn’t like is noise, and he is also very sensitive and doesn’t like to go too close to other horses. He also hates flies and that is why he always wears a little mask. And somehow he hates trucks!” De Luca laughs.
