Bertram Allen: "I hope Gothenburg will turn out to be another lucky Swedish city for me"

European Championships 2017

On the opening day of the European Championships in Gothenburg, Irish super-star Bertram Allen takes us behind the scenes with the Irish team in the WoSJ guest blog.

"We had an early start today since the first qualifier started already at 8.45 in the morning. I woke up at six, and rode Hector a little bit just before seven – nothing special, just a bit of easy excercise. After that we all put our team stuff on, and went to walk the course.

I was number ten to go with Hector, so I got on him early and all went well in the warm-up. I think he jumped really well in the ring too, but there was just one miscommunication. I totally take responsibility for that - I think Hector could not have jumped better. As a team we are still in a very good position and I am really looking forward to tomorrow so I can try and make up for today’s performance and hopefully we can get a good team result. After the class I just took it easy; watched the rest of the class with my friends, went back to the stables and had lunch with the team.

We have a great team spirit. The last week before coming here none of us went to shows, and instead we just spent a few days together as a team and trained. We spend all the days together here, and even though there is no official dinner planned for tonight we will probably anyway meet up and eat together.

We are all hungry for success so it will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings.

It is actually my first time here in Gothenburg! I have been to Sweden several times, but only to Falsterbo and Stockholm. Sweden has always been a lucky country for me and as championships are always special, it is nice to have the Europeans here. I like the venue at Ullevi, it is nice that we have a lot of space and that the stadium is so big. I just hope we can fill up the audience a bit for the weekend!

When it comes to betting on the podium finishers, I think Peder is in a really strong position. But to be honest, it is not an easy position to be - there are many days left and anything can happen. For the teams, I think it is all wide open. Of course I hope that we Irish can keep it together – maybe Gothenburg can prove to be another lucky Swedish city for me…
