Friday's highlight at the CSI5*-W event in Mechelen, Belgium, was the 61,800 Euro Sport Vlaandren Grand Prix. Ten out of the 42 riders cleared their way over the 1.50m track set by Eddy Geusemans and team, that counted 13 obstacles and 16 efforts in the first round. The hosts were on top form, with five out of the ten that joined the jump-off over a shortened, seven-fence track being Belgians.

The fully packed Nekkerhal was lit up when Nicola Philippaerts (BEL) on the 10-year-old gelding H&M Harley vd Bisschop (Dulf van den Bisschop x Coronado) took an early lead, galloping over the finish line in a time of 31,77 seconds. Soon after, with the tiniest of margins, Pieter Devos (BEL) on the 12-year-old gelding Apart (Larino x Burggraaf) pushed Philippaerts down to second place after clocking a time of 31,7. But Devos had to settle for the runner-up position in the end, when last to go in the jump-off, Niels Bruynseels (BEL) on the 11-year-old mare Gancia de Muze (Malito de Reve x Nimmerdor) blazed over the finish line, taking home the win with a time of 31,53 seconds. "I was beaten by my best friend," Devos said afterwards. "I could not be happier for him."

Cristophe Vanderhasselt (BEL) on the 9-year-old mare Identity Vitseroel (Air Jordan Z x Darco) took the fourth place with a time of 32,90 seconds, while the fifth spot went to Johnny Pals (NED) on the 9-year-old stallion Chat Botte du Ruisseau Z (Casall x Darco), after the pair clocked a time of 34,51.

"It is a very special win here tonight," Bruynseels commented after the prize giving. "The atmosphere here in Mechelen is just unbelievable, and my horse is just fantastic – she always tries her best for me."
