Future So Bright

Marcus Ehning’s 7-year-old gelding Priam du Roset caught our eye during the youngster classes in Gothenburg. Tall and huge, and by Ehning’s former super-star Plot Blue out of the mare Ganaelle du Roset – we wanted to learn more about this young talent.

“Judith Goelkel and I bought him in Switzerland, close to Geneva, at the end of his fifth year. Priam du Roset is a very big horse, nearly 1,80 and has a lot of blood. He is big to ride, but not heavy at all: Quite light and you don’t need that much leg. So far he is still a bit strong and wants to go a bit too much, but he is really not a difficult horse to ride. Priam du Roset has all the scope in the world and even though he is quite green for his age, he is not spooky at all and is very clever,” Ehning says about his 7-year-old.

The show in Gothenburg was only the second show for Ehning with Priam du Roset. The first show took place a week earlier at a national show in Germany. Before that Ehning’s stable jockey Daniel Engbers has competed him.

“He was in Sweden with Maria Gretzer for half a year and came back to us at the end of the summer,” Ehning explains. “So during autumn we let him jump in some bigger classes.”

The arena in Gothenburg can be intimidating for some horses, but Priam du Roset did really well. “He was really cool about it. The jumps were not that big for him, but still it is a very good experience for the horses to jump at such a show.”

Since Ehning has ridden Priam du Roset’s father Plot Blue we asked him to compare the two horses. “He has a bit the same mentality as his father Plot Blue. He always wants to go; a really forward horse and you just have to get him calmer. The canter is very flexible and he also has a massive scope,” Ehning tells.

The plans for the future?  “We will see how he is going now for the next weeks and months. For sure he is ready for the youngster tours everywhere, and I hope that I – or my rider - can show him in a few big grass rings to give him experience.”
