Matthew Sampson (GBR) and Gloria van Zuuthoeve (Thunder van de Zuuthoeve x Glorieux) took a historical win in the prestigious Hamburg Derby on Sunday. “I have never been riding such a lap of honour, it is a thing I will never forget,” Sampson said after being celebrated by a full arena in Hamburg.

Three horse-and-rider combinations did an amazing job to clear the first round of the derby, and ended in a jump-off where Sampson was the only one to clear the shortened course. With the win in the derby, Sampson climbed the DKB-Riders Tour ranking and can get a place to ride in the next legs of the tour. “I will of course be happy to take the chance to ride the rest of the legs here in Germany,” he said.

Last year’s runner-up Gilbert Tillmann (GER) with Claus Dieter (Clarimo x Cantus) had to settle for second place this year as well, after four faults in the jump-off. “First of all, I’m very proud that it went just as well this year as last year. Claus Dieter gives me so much fun and I enjoy the moment a lot,” said the very successful Hamburg Derby rider Tillmann after his ride.

Sandra Auffarth (GER), World Champion in three-day eventing, did her first derby in Hamburg riding Nupafeed’s La Vista (Lordanos x For Pleasure) – a horse bred by her father – to a third place after being four seconds faster than Sampson in the jump-off, but with eight faults on the account. “As a three-day eventing rider, I’m not going to my limit in the jumping part and the derby here is a really good challenge. If the mare is fit and sound I will be back next year. She had a lot of fun and played with the fences and I think we made the class really exciting,” Auffarth said after her successful debut.

Four riders ended the difficult first round with only four faults – Benjamin Wulschner (GER) with Bangkok Girl PP (Balou du Rouet x Quo Vadis) as rank four, Holly Smith (GBR) with Quality Old Joker (O.B.O.S. Quality 004 x Slyguff Joker) as rank five, Gerarld Nothdurft (GER) with Amazing (Askari x Leonid) as rank six and James Whitaker (GBR) with Glenavadra Brilliant (Brilliant Lad x Powerswood Purple) as rank seven.
