Rules

During last week’s FEI Board meetings, the new FEI Regulations for Equestrian Events at the Olympic Games – which are effective for Tokyo – were approved. Following the postponement of the Olympics to 2021, the regulations underwent a full review and have been updated predominantly with regards to qualification, eligibility requirements and deadlines.

The updated regulations have been published here.

As previously reported, the FEI has moved the deadline to achieve the Minimum Eligibility Requirements (MER) for the Olympic Games in Tokyo from 1 June 2020 to 21 June 2021. A list of selected 2021 MER events will be published by the FEI in December 2020. For horse-and-rider combinations that achieved their full MER last year, additional confirming result have been introduced – ref. the regulations’ art. 632. A number of additional provisions related to the postponement of the Olympic Games have also been added to the regulations.

Furthermore, deadlines on ownership registrations have been moved to 2021 – ref. the regulations’ art. 2.2. Horses entered for the equestrian events at the Olympic Games must be registered with FEI as property of owners of the same nationality as the athlete by 15 January 2021. This is also the deadline for horses with multinational ownership, which must be registered with FEI under the name of the nation for which the horse will compete during the Olympic Games.

Other new deadlines include the nomination of the long list of athletes who could possibly be entered for the Olympic Games, which has been moved to 23 April 2021. The deadline for final entries has been moved to 5 July 2021 23:59 Tokyo time.

The complete rules for the individual and team jumping competitions in Tokyo can also be found in the new regulations – ref. art. 630.
