For the first time in history, an equestrian discipline was awarded by the Swedish Sports Academy when the jumping team that won Olympic gold in Tokyo was named Team of the Year at last night's annual Sports Gala in Sweden.

The Swedish Olympic jumping team also received the Jerring Award, an award established by the sport section of the Swedish Radio for the best sport performance of the year – which is decided by an audience vote. Additionally, the Swedish Olympic jumping team received the Svenska Dagbladet’s Gold Medal during the evening – one of the most prestigious annual sporting awards in Sweden, for the most significant Swedish sports achievement of the year.

"It’s a very proud day for equestrian sports," said Ulf Brömster from the Swedish Equestrian Federation. “I want to direct a big congratulations to our jumping team for this historical award after an incredible golden year. What they have achieved is worthy of all awards, and it’s extra satisfying that it’s the sports community in Sweden that is behind this. To crown the evening with the greatest award of all – the Jerring Award – illustrates what we already knew: That the Olympic gold is an achievement that has had an effect way beyond the equestrian sports."

Olympic gold medalists Peder Fredricson, Malin Baryard Johnsson and Henrik von Eckermann were all present with Swedish team manager Henrik Ankarcrona to receive the awards. "It’s a big honour to stand here with these fantastic riders," Ankarcrona said. "To build a strong team there can be no weak links, and I would claim that in Tokyo there were no weak links, and that’s why we are standing here today."

"We would like to thank our fantastic horses: Indie, Allan and Eddie," Malin Baryard-Johnsson said. “We want to thank our owners, our teams that were present in Tokyo and our teams at home, as well as our families, the federation and the Swedish Olympic Committee – the list is long."
