Holsteiner stallion grading: 65 colts accepted at Neumünster
"We have seen almost 300 colts", said breeding director Dr. Thomas Nissen after the pre-selection tour at Elmshorn, which means no significant decrease compared to last year. 65 colts have been entered into the current catalogue after the vet check.
This year's selection of Holsteiner Verband stallion candidates is characterized by a great variety of bloodlines ranging from A like Aljetto to Z like Zirocco Blue, with some colts by outside blood sires, like for example Baloubet du Rouet, which is represented by two offspring, or Cornet Obolensky, which has been attracting attention for his show jumping offspring not only at the World Equestrian Games. In the meantime, Zirocco Blue has contested his first Nations Cups under Dutchman Jur Vrieling. The Mister Blue son is represented by two offspring at Neumünster.
The sire of exceptional champion stallion Diarado, Diamant de Semilly, and Quidam de Reve, a highly proven sire in Holsteiner breeding, send one offspring, each. "The breeders are ready and willing to absorb outside blood" states Dr. Thomas Nissen.
Once again, Casall has the most offspring, seven, to be exact, at this year's stallion grading. Casall – recently in the top 4 jumping final at the Caen World Equestrian Games – is one of the best sires in the world, with his offspring enjoying equal success in breeding (champion mares, graded stallions) and equestrianism. Caretino has made history in Holstein and comes up with his probably last Holsteiner stallion candidates. Colman, sire of nationwide more than 30 licensed stallions as well as of successful FEI sport horses, is represented by sons same as Clarimo, under Rolf-Göran Bengtsson 3rd in the Grand Prix in Wien not long since.
But also some promising young stallions have had their offspring accepted for grading this year, like for example 2009 champion stallion Cassilano, Cassin, Castelan II, Crunch, For Fashion, Nerrado, Quick Fire or Quiwi Dream.
"It is a fine line, but we want to make the grade", says Dr. Thomas Nissen regarding the use of dressage stallions in Holsteiner breeding. Neumünster will see Damon Hill, Krack C and Quaterback offspring perform the trot. According to the breeding director, the two part bred colts by TB sires Ibisco and Water Dance boast "great athleticism". Some stallion candidates have an injection of "blood" through the TB sires Exorbitant, Grundyman, Langata Express or Sacramento Song further back in their bloodlines, with "blood" standing for spirit and ambition, traits on top of the priority list in modern show jumping.
