Saturday, 02 August 2014

The winning American team in Gijon. Photo provided by CSIO Gijon.USA won their second Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup in 24 hours when taking the win in the Europe Division 2 leg in Gijon, on Saturday. It was only yesterday that the US team went to the top in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Europe Division 1 at Hickstead. "We all watched Hickstead yesterday and we were really proud of them, so we wanted to compete with them here today and show them we could do it too," said American anchor Georgina Bloomberg this evening after producing one of just two double-clear performances.

There were 11 teams in action at the Spanish venue, but only two eligible for Europe Division 2 qualifying points. It was the fourth-placed Italians who clinched the maximum 100 while Norway claimed 90 when slotting into seventh place.

Once again the American victory was crisp and clear as their eight-fault final score left them well ahead of Switzerland in second with 13 while the British were close behind in third with 15 faults at the end of the day.

On the winning American Nations Cup team was Ashlee Bond Clarke on Chela LS (4/0), Catherine Pasmore on Bonanza van Paemel (0/4), Quentin Judge on HH Copin van de Broy (4/4), Georgina Bloomberg on Juvina (0/0). "I think the courses have been beautiful all week – I've never seen a show like this before. In that sense it has been great. Most of the faults came from jump 11 but I mastered it so I hope the obstacle pops up again for the Grand Prix," said Cathrine Pasmore following her team's win.

The Swiss team ending second was made up by Nadja Peter-Steiner on Capuera ll (5/8), Claudia Gisler on Cordel (4/0), Niklaus Rutschi on Windsor XV (0/4) and Marie Etter-Pellegrin on Admirable (8/0). Holly Gillot on Dougie Douglas (1/1), Yasmin Pinchen on Ashkari (8/1), Robert Bevis on Pebbles IV (9/0) and Laura Renwick on Bintang ll (4/Ret) were on the British team.
