Cian O'Connor and Blue Loyd on top in the Longines Grand Prix in Dublin

Sunday, 11 August 2013

Cian O'Connor and Blue Loyd - here seen in St. Gallen earlier this year. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson.Cian O'Connor made it a home win in the Longines Grand Prix at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show on Sunday riding his Olympic partner Blue Loyd (by Landor S). With one of only two double clears in the Grand Prix, Cian gave the home crowds the perfect finish to what has been a very good weekend for the Irish riders. The second double clear came from Ukraine's Ulrich Kirchhoff and Carlina (by Carvallo) - who where third in the Grand Prix at Hickstead last weekend - but they could do nothing about O'Connor's time and finished more than four seconds behind. Ben Maher and Cella finished third, with the fastest time of the day - but on the expense of one rail.

Though Cian sold Blue Loyd shortly after the Olympics, the horse's new owner Nicole Walker has lent the Irish rider his former mount on several important occasions this year.

O'Connor said after his triumph today: "The Longines Grand Prix at Dublin is a Grand Prix every Irish rider wants to win, and I'm just overwhelmed at my victory today. The horse jumped so well for me, both on Friday and today, and I'm very grateful to Blue Loyd's owner Nicole Walker for making him available to me at one of the greatest shows in the world."
