As last to go in the prestigious Copa Del Rey at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, Emanuele Gaudiano stole the win on Cocoshynsky (Cornet Obolensky x Popcorn). It was exciting to the bitter end in this huge 1.55 class – and the audience which filled the stands really got what they paid for as only four riders managed to produce double clear rounds. As the final one in the ring, the Italian rider went all in to catch Patrice Delaveau who had produced two beautiful clear rounds on Orient Express HDC (Quick Star Sf x Le Tot de Semilly) taking the lead on a time of 52.73 seconds.
Although it looked like the French rider would be the winner when he as second-last-to go pushed John Whitaker and Argento (Arko III x Gasper) down to runner-up position, it was not to be as Gaudiano went flat out around the shortened track. The Massimo Dutti oxer towards the end almost got him though, but Cocoshynsky pulled his legs out leaving it intact and Gaudiano went full speed to the two final fences. Crossing the finish line he had shaved off over a second on Delaveau's time pushing him down to runner-up position and Whitaker down to third. Fourth was Kent Farrington on Ambler Gambler (Colander x Numero Uno) with the final double clear of the class.
