While Ireland's Susan Fitzpatrick took home the individual gold medal at this weekend's European Championships for ponies in Arezzo, Germany claimed the the team gold. The German team climbed to the top of the podium, with Great Britain behind them in silver medal position and Ireland in bronze medal position. Halfway in the competition it seemed like the defending champions from Britain had it all sewn up with the only zero score, but France, Ireland and Germany were all lying just a fence behind. In the end, three second-round clears from Germany sealed it. Philipp Schulze Tophoff on Mentos Junior 2, Enno Klaphake on Pepper Ann, Justin Tebbel on Okehurst Little Bow Wow and Lara Volmer on Carrick 13 were part of the German team.
The individual final was a real thriller, with Ireland’s Susan Fitzpatrick and Rock Dee Jay emerging to take the gold. It was Fitzpatrick’s double-clear that clinched it for the 14 year old from Country Kilkenny. The silver and bronze medals had to be decided by a jump-off, with five riders in it. In the jump-off Millie Allen and Song Girl were the best with a superb run in 32.91 seconds to claim silver, while Jessica Toelstang and Nikolina took the bronze.
