Farewell to Sapphire

Sunday, 22 June 2014

Sapphire and McLain Ward at the 2008 Olympic Games. Photo by Ken Braddick / sadly, McLain Ward's former top horse Sapphire (Darco x Hedjaz) has passed away due to complications from colic. The now 19 year old mare was retired from the sport in 2012 after a fantastic career that included two Olympic team gold medals from Athens in 2004 and Hong Kong in 2008 as well as team silver from the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen.

Horse Junkies United has shared this statement from Ward; "With a very heavy heart I have to share that Sara has passed away this morning due to complications from colic. Our entire Castle Hill family and every person she has touched has lost a great friend. Thank you Sara not just for all the dreams you made come true but simply for being who you were. You always will be my champion in every way. God speed good friend."

Our thoughts go to McLain and his team.
