German Spring-Derby to Andre Thieme

Sunday, 05 June 2011

Andre Thieme just won the Hamburg Derby for the third time. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson. The famous German Spring-Derby saw Andre Thieme and Nacorde (Concorde x Renville) go all the way to the top for the third time in the beautiful surroundings in Klein Flottbek, Hamburg. The arena was packed with spectators who enjoyed exciting sport in fantastic weather, and the crowd cheered on the competitors as they fought their way through the track.

As usually the derby course gave the competitors a lot of challenges; there were gates, walls, water, two smaller banks jumped as a combination, the big derby bank followed by a big white gate and also a combination consisting of two poles only – almost hanging in the air. Several fences were over 1,60 meters high, for example the white gate after the derby bank that stood at 1,65.

First to go Andre Sakakini on Loro Piana Chammartin (Carvallo x Lantaan) found it so difficult that he retired after the derby bank; a sure sign that it was going to be tough for those who came after him. Torben Köhlbrand’s horse C-Trenton Z (Carthago x Calypso II) on the other hand jumped an amazing round – but still finished on four faults. Torben tells us after the class that he had two qualifikations that was everything but motivating, since he had choosed wrong bit witch made C-Trenton Z insecure. Then Marten Frehe-Siermann fell off at fence eleven – and plenty of action followed in the same style.

Marcel Ewen was so happy with his eight faults round. Photo by Jenny AbrahamssonMarcel Ewen from Luxenburg with Orqueil Fontaine did as startnumber 23 a wounderful round and managed to jump most of the difficulties beutiful and even tough two rails fell, he was happier than anyone. And in the end those eight faults led him to a third place. "It is a childhood dream to ride the Hamburg Derby so this year I called and asked if I was allowed to come. Three weeks ago they sad it was ok so then I started training. But we don´t have this kind of jumps at home in Luxenburg so I used what ever I could find in the surrounding to get my horse a bit prepared."

Torben Köhlbrandt and C-Trenton Z did a fantastic round and ended up in second place. Photo by Jenny AbrahamssonMichael Whitaker with the 18 year old Animation II (Animo) showed that they have done this before and made it look quite easy but still two fences fell to the ground. Andre Thieme with Nacorde (Concorde x Renville) has won this derby two times already but Andre explained that he was really insecure before the start today. "The first qualification was fantastic but in the second qualification I did a big error and I knew that Nacorde was thinking about this and he has been in a really bad mode ever since" But both Andre and Nacorde did a great round today and ended up with four faults in the first round.

Since two of the riders ended up with four faults we could follow a great jump-off. First to go was Torben Köhlbrandt and C-Trenton Z. C-Trenton looked a bit tired after the first round but he fought his way around and stayed clear on the fences, but got two timefaults. Next and last was then Andre Thieme with Nacorde and with a fast and clear round the ended up on top.
