Gregory Wathelet wins the Golden Drum of Basel for a second consecutive year

Friday, 09 January 2015

Just like last year it was Gregory Wathelet and Conrad de Hus (Con Air x Locato) that won the Golden Drum of Basel. Fourteen riders went clear in the first round of this 1.55 class, but nobody could do anything about Wathelet - who used the stallion's huge stride to cover the ground and as always with precision that made it look easy as he took the lead on 32.06 seconds. None of those to come could catch Wathelet, who took the top price of 18'750 Swiss Francs and the Golden Drum of Basel.

Wathelet was 14 hundredths faster than Sweden's Rolf-Göran Bengtsson on Casall Ask (Caretino x Lavall I), a veteran that has now turned 16 years old. Home rider Niklaus Rutschi rode a spectacular jump-off on Windsor XV (Karandasj x Wellington), but was stilll 21 hundredths seconds slower than the winner and had to settle for third place.

The 1.45 Preis der Thermoplan AG went to Olivier Philippaerts on King de Papignies Z (Kashmir van'T Schuttershof). Second was Steve Guerdat, and third Marlon Zanotelli.
