HRH Princess Haya has announced that she will not stand for a third term as FEI President. HRH Princess Haya was elected as FEI President in 2006 in the first-ever contested election for the FEI Presidency. She was re-elected in 2010.
Following her election in 2006, Princess Haya initiated a motion to limit the term of the FEI President to two, four-year terms, which was passed by the FEI General Assembly and incorporated into the FEI Statutes.
At the 2013 FEI General Assembly in Montreux (SUI), 100 National Federations signed a petition calling for an Extraordinary General Assembly (EGA) to change the FEI Statutes relating to the Presidential term. An EGA was held in Lausanne (SUI) in April of this year and National Federations voted overwhelming in support of a change to the Statutes increasing the maximum term in office of the FEI President to three four-year terms.
Despite the changes HRH Princess Haya states that after a great deal of thought and reflection she has decided not to stand for a third term as she wants to prioritize her family and her two children.
The election for the FEI Presidency takes place at the General Assembly in Baku (AZE) on 14 December 2014. The deadline for candidates to register their candidacy with the FEI Secretary General is 1 September 2014.
