Thursday’s five star classes at Hickstead saw two home riders on top; Ben Maher won the biggest class of the day on Aristo Z (Andiamo x Flamenco de Semilly), while Guy Williams took the speed class earlier in the morning on Bijou van de Vijfheide (Darco x Laudanum). It was also Guy that for a long time held the lead in the 1.50 class – The Bunn Leisure Trophy – as he on Depardieu van T Kiezelhof (Thunder van der Zuuthoeve x Lantano) produced a double clear round, and a very fast jump-off at 33.71 seconds.
Coming in with only three riders left to go in the huge grass arena at Hickstead – which was bading in sun and over 30 degrees – Ben rode one of his typical extremely efficient jump-off rounds on Aristo Z after having produced a super clear over the first round eight fence track. Crossing the finish line at 33.01, he pushed Guy down to second. Last to go Niklaus Rutschi ended third on a time of 34.25 riding Earl Pery'S Caro CH (Caretino x Heraldik).
