Lauren Hough, Eric Lamaze and Kent Farrington won one class each on the opening day of the Spruce Meadows 'Masters'. After an amazing effort from the Spruce Meadows team the international arena was cleared from snow and the competitions could start on Thursday. So in minus degrees, with snow everywhere around the arena the riders could compete in the grass ring.
Lauren Hough won the biggest class of the day - the Cana Cup - riding Ohlala (Orlando x Cardento). It was a table A class over 1,60 meters fences and only eight riders out of 42 starters cleared the course. Kent Farrington with Uceko (Celano x Koriander) was in the lead for almost the entire the class, but in the end he had to see himself beaten by Hough. Kevin Staut and Oh d'Eole (Kannan x Papillon Rouge) ended third while Marco Kutscher on Van Gogh (Numero Uno x Berstein) ended fourth.
Earlier in the day Eric Lamaze did a very convincing round with Fine Lady 5 (Forsyth x Drosselklang II) which was good enough to win the 1,50 m ATCO Structures & Logistics Cup. The Canadian rider left Nicola Philippaerts with Cortez (Quick Star x Quito de Baussy) behind him in second. Also this class was a table A with full speed from the beginning to the end. Rich Fellers and Lux Lady (Lux Z x Master) were fast enough for the third place while the fourth place went to Billy Twomey with Royale du Rouet (Jeff d'Or x Kannan).
The first class of the day - the Telus Cup - was a 1,50 m class won by Kent Farrington and Blue Angel (Luidam x Ascendent). American and Belgian riders dominated this class with Farrington being 1,5 second faster than his fellow country man McLain Ward on HH Carlos Z (Chellano Z x Voltaire). Third place went to Belgium and Pieter Devos aboard Echo D (Orlando x Skippy II), fourth place to the US and Rich Fellers with Flexible (Cruising x Safari) ahead of Nicola Philippaerts from Belgium who ended fifth on Forever d'Arco ter Linden (Darco x Tenor Manciais).
