Italian riders rule in Rome

Thursday, 26 May 2011

Giulia Martinengo wins Thursday's biggest class in Rome. Photo by Bruno De Lorenzo. The Italian riders were in sensational form on the opening day of the CSIO5* show in Rome. The biggest class of the day – the Trofeo Mercedes Benz Roma – saw Giulia Martinengo go all the way to the top. Giovanni Bussu's first-round track in this 1.50 class produced no less than 36 clears, so it was a real race against the clock in the jump-off.

Martinengo had the fastest time in the jump-off; she crossed the finish line on 27.48 seconds aboard  Loro Piana Chiclana (Cascavelle x Lavall I) – while winners from Paris; Rik Hemeryck and Quarco de Kerambars (Darco x Skippy II) were extremely close in second with the time of 27.49. Nick Skelton finished third with his fantastic Big Star (Quick Star x Nimmerdor) on 27.89 – just behind the two others.

The 1.45 class was won by Rodrigo Pessoa on the home-bred Loro Piana Palouchin (Baloubet du Rouet x Chin Chin). The Brazilian rider left Ashlee Bond and Cadett Z (Cord de la Bryere x Capitol I) as runners-up. Italian rider Fabio Brotto and Master Erg Delle Roane (Animo x Argentinus) finished in third position.
