As last to go in an eight-horse jump-off, it was the superfast couple Kent Farrington and Blue Angel (Luidam x Ascendan) that won the 1.50 class at the CSIO5* event in Rome on Saturday afternoon. The class had over sixty horses and riders in it, and opposite of Thursday's huge field of clears – only eight riders went clear this time around and four recorded a single time penalty. With some really fast pairs in it, the jump-off was bound to be a race.
Ludger Beerbaum on Zinedine (Guidam x Heartbreaker) and Jur Vrieling on Zavall VDL (Casall x Emilion) set early targets and leading times, but two riders later Vrieling was pushed down to second by Alexander Zetterman on Cafino (Cardento 933 x Roderik 856) as the Swedish rider shaved off 0.74 seconds on Jur's time. As last to go though, Kent Farrington blazed around the shortened track leaving no doubt about the fact that he was in it to win. Crossing the finish line almost a second faster than Zetterman, Farrington stole the win as the last one in the ring.
Earlier in the day Eric Lamaze recorded his second win for the weekend, this time on Cesanna (Cento x Centauer Z) – winning the 1.40 class. Daniel Deusser was second on Air Pia Z (Air Jordan Z x Pilot) and Gerco Schröder third on Zamora (Quasimodo Z x Nimmerdor).
