Ludger Beerbaum was totally unbeatable at the Donbass Tour on Sunday, taking home both the 1.50 class and the 1.60 Grand Prix. In the 1.50 class, Ludger was one of eight riders to make it to the second phase – and after having one down in yesterday’s 1.55 jump-off the German rider was hungry for revenge. Aboard Chaman (Baloubet du Rouet x I Love You) he entered the ring as the third rider chasing the clock, and performed a text book clear stopping the clock at 40.53.
In the Grand Prix, Ludger rode Chiara (Contender x Coronado) – and in the jump-off he was joined by his colleague Henrik von Eckermann on Gotha FRH (Goldfever x Prestige Pilot), Denis Lynch on All Star 5 (Argentinus x Alme), Luciana Diniz on Lennox (Lifestyle x Grannus) and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum on Unbelievable (Manhattan x Democraat). The course set up for the 21 riders in the class was tricky enough, and the line from the open water to a vertical-vertical combination caught out quite a few as did the final combination at 12a and b.
Henrik opened the jump-off, but Gotha hit the front pole on the oxer that was fourth in the shortened track – eventually putting them fifth. Denis was next and had the back pole on the oxer at fence two down on the impressive stallion, which left them in fourth place. And so it continued, as Luciana produced a very fast round at 41.93 seconds but at the expense of the a-element in the combination down while Meredith took the penultimate oxer with her crossing the finish line on 43.23 seconds.
Then it was time for Ludger and Chiara, and as the other four riders all had faults the door was left wide open for the German rider. Ludger grabbed the chance with both hands and rode a beautiful clear on Chiara at 47.15 seconds, collecting the top prize of 125 000 Euro and leaving second to Luciana and third to Meredith.
