Wednesday, 01 August 2012

Marc Houtzager and Tamino. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson.Today it is time to present our fifth Olympic team - the Dutch team. The team consists of Marc Houtzager, Gerco Schröder, Maikel van der Vleuten and Jur Vrieling together with their coach Rob Ehrens.

Marc Houtzager is 41 years old and will do his second Olympic Games. He did his first Olympics in Hong Kong in 2008, where Marc finished 7th individually and 4th with the team. That time he was riding Opium VS and this time he will ride Sterrehof's Tamino by Numero Uno x Farmer. Tamino is a 12 year old gelding owned by Stoeterij Sterrehof. The breeder is E. ten Hoor from Holland.

Marc started to ride when he was ten years old at the riding school where his parents managed the restaurant and cafe. Through his career he has ridden in the stables of Jan Broek, Roelof Bril, Johan Heins and Willy van der Ham. Marc has had his own stable since 1997, and is running his buisness together with his partner Julia Kayser, who is an international rider from Austria.

Gerco and London. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson.34 year old Gerco Schröder will ride the horse with what is probably the best name at the Olympics - London. This will be Gerco's third Olympic Games in a row but the first Olympics for the ten year old stallion by Nabab de Reve x Chin Chin. The breeder of London is Joris de Brabander and the owners is Gevi International BV.

Gerco was on the winning Dutch team at the WEG in 2006 with Eurocommerce Berlin and has been riding horses for the Eurocommerce stable for more than ten years. But Gerco is not the only one in his family that rides; his brothers Ben and Wim are also well known showjumpers.

Maikel and Verdi. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson.Maikel van der Vleuten is 24 years old and will do his first Olympic Games after some great results over the past two seasons with Verdi TN. Verdi is a ten year old stallion by Quidam de Revel x Landgraf. He is bred by Veehandel Musterd BV and owned by Stal v/d Vleuten, Team Nijhof and C. v/d Oetelaar.

Maikel is the son of showjumper Eric van der Vleuten, who has been on top of the sport for several years.

Jur and Bubalu. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson.Jur Vrieling will also do his first Olympics together with Bubalu by Baloubet du Rouet x Nimmerdor. The couple are reigning Dutch champions and they were also at the WEG 2010 together. Bubalu is a bay ten year old stallion bred and owned by VDL Stud/W. van de Lageweg.

Jur is now running a competition yard together with Suzanne Tepper, who also is a successful showjumper, with about 35 horses.

Rob Ehrens has been Chef d'Equipe for Holland since the 1st of October in 2004 and has won several medals with the team. Rob used to be an international showjumper himself and rode at the World Championships in Dublin and in Aachen 1982 and 1986.
