British showjumping team manager Rob Hoekstra is currently in South Africa giving a five day clinic to the country's top riders and coaches. Hoekstra arrived in Johannesburg on Monday the 11th of February and is working towards advancing the level of competitive showjumping and coaching in the country. Sixteen of South Africa's top showjumping coaches were selected to participate in the first three days of the clinic, dubbed 'Coach the coaches'. 'Coach the Coaches' is an initiative the South African Equestrian Association wants to carry out annually and they are in fact hoping to bring Rob out again in October this year.
Coaching the coaches was the main reason for bringing out Rob Hoesktra to South Africa to upgrade the level of coaching in the country, and bring South Africa up to standard with the rest of the world. Each coach had to bring one of their pupils along who was to be their 'dummy rider'. Rob trained each coach how to instruct their pupil in the correct manner that mimics the training system of top showjumpers abroad. Thursday and Friday is dedicated to the top sixteen riders in South Africa who will be taught in four groups of +-2 hour sessions.
