Quotes after the FEI World Breeding Jumping Championship for 7 year olds

Monday, 22 September 2014

Ireland's super talent Bertram Allen won again in Lanaken with Barnike. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson.Gold medalist Bertram Allen, who also won the final for 6 year olds last year on his horse Barnike: “I did a few indoor shows with Barnike after Lanaken last year, and then she had a long break. I brought her back in January and did a few shows with her. She was quite hot, so it took a bit time to get her back into good form. Actually it took a bit more time than expected, because she was so fresh – but when she goes to shows more frequently she gets better to ride.”

Christian Ahlmann on his silver medalist Casuality Z: “I have had him since the week before Münster, so for about six - eight weeks. Münster was the first show I did with him, I jumped him two classes there. Casuality Z knows the ring here and how it goes - he jumped the final here two times already as a five and a six year old. He is a really good horse, nice to ride, really easy.”

Niklas Arvidsson got the bronze medal on Hasard: “I got my horse about nine-ten months ago. I have done most of the shows for youngsters in Sweden with him. He won the championship for 7 year olds in Falsterbo this summer. It is a fantastic horse, he is super careful. As he is a stallion, he bred a bit this summer – but hopefully the owners can take him on frozen semen next year so that he can stay only in the sport. It makes it a little bit easier to take him up to the next level.”

Christian Ahlmann said this about the track in the final: “When I walked the course I thought it was a proper course and I thought that the double away from the entrance and the triple combinations would cause some problems. My horse did a very good job, he is an absolute top horse and I thought after five riders, when we already had three clears that it might be a lot. But in the end we had a good level and we could see that the fences were big enough today.”

Bertram Allen on his strategy in the jump-off, as there were no clears as he was to go third last and still went all in: “I was quite surprised that there were no clears to be honest. I just said I would give it a try, and I knew Christian was coming behind me and that he would give it a good try. I went as fast as I could and as fast as I thought that my mare could go and the longer I got into the track the faster it went. It was a bit faster than I planned. I think she loves to run.”

Bertram Allen on the future of his mare Barnike: “She is great. When you see her you don't think she has so much scope, but she has so much blood and a usable body so she always finds a way to get to the other side. I'm not sure how far she can get, but today was already a descent course so she can be a very useful horse.”
