Quotes after the GCT Grand Prix in London; “Ben gave us a lesson today on how to win a class"

Ben Maher at the press conference after his great London win! Photo by Hanne Christensen. The winner Ben Maher on his unbelievable jump-off; “I had nothing to lose to make the podium, I was prepared for a risk – I trust my horse as she’s a very fast horse, although she is new. It was one of those jump-offs that paid off, every time I turned and rode away from the previous jump there was a distance there. I don’t think I could have ridden it quicker again even if I tried.”

Ben on Cella and the fact that they are a relatively new combination compared to the other two on the podium; “She’s a phenomenal horse. I have been competing her at Palm Beach and that set me up. She had amazing results there; winning the Grand Prix there. It set me up very well for the rest of the year. I had to take some time off myself after a back injury, and we had a bad round in Rome a couple of weeks ago – I think she was sick, she wasn’t very well so we were lacking a little confidence but she got back to herself today. She does it in her own style but she is a great horse and a trier!”

Runner-up Nick Skelton; “I was very pleased with Big Star. He is in great form, and he has been for the last three shows with Rome and La Baule so I can’t complain as he has been phenomenal. With competitions like this to go last is definitely the key and I tried very hard in the first round to get the last draw. I think for the public and the television it was a great competition. It was very exciting and a great result.

Third place Christian Ahlmann on how he felt as second to go in the jump-off; “I felt quite well, I was hoping a little bit to win this Grand Prix. But it was sure that it was not going to be easy. We had ten riders in the jump-off, and everybody could win today. We had a really, really great jump-off, one faster than the other – but I must say Ben gave us a lesson today on how to win a class.”

GCT-leader Luciana Diniz; “I said that 2013 was going to be my year so I think this is a result of all my good actions in the last months. I started 2013 with winning two 5* Grand Prixs, and I’m also very happy that Winningmood now is back. I would like to congratulate Jan Tops, the organizers, the sponsors, the course designer – we had a great, great show here and we are all happy. I have all good things to say about this show; it’s been fantastic!”
