Schwizer and van Asten on day one in Abu Dhabi

Thursday, 24 November 2011

Pius Schwizer and Ulysse. Photo by Stefano Grasso/GCT.The first day of competitions in Abu Dhabi has finished. It’s been two classes  - one 1.45 Table A against the clock and one 1.50, also this one a speed class. For most riders today has been the day to find out how their horses feel, and what they need before the big final Saturday. There is a lot of money at stake, and every move is thoroughly planned.

The 1.45 class had 41 combinations to start and elleven clears. The fastest round came with Pius Schwizer and Ulysse (Nonstop x Jus de Pommes). The Swiss rider is on a winning streak these days, and could add 8000 € to his account after today’s win. Sergio Alvares Moya was runner up today with Sirius (Laroche x Tolbert), while Penelope Leprevost gave the top three a female touch as she secured third place aboard Oscar des Fontaines (Lando x Mr. Blue). In the 1. 50 class it was Leopold van Asten who took home the win riding VDL Groep Quinara (Quinar x Carthago). Van Asten was a second faster than Michel Robert and Kellemoi de Pepita ( Voltaire x Jalme des Mesnuls) who came second only a fraction faster than Maikel van der Vleuten and VDL Groep Verdi (Quidam de Revel x Landgraf).
