On home soil in Gijon, Spain demonstrated that they should be a force to be reckoned with when the Promotional League final comes up in Barcelona. With a total of twelve penalties the Spanish riders went all the way to the top in the last leg of the league for 2011.
Madrid-bound Pilar Cordon Muro and Julio Arias Cueva both delivered double clears for the team on Nuage Bleu (Fildor de Largival x Odjak du Trens) and Murat de Reve (Baloubet du Rouet x Arpege Pierre); maybe a sign of what they could be capable of at the Europeans in less than two weeks.
Great Britain finished second on fifteen penalties; Bruze Menzies on Sultan (Irco Mena x Voltaire) delivered a double clear, while David McPherson and Billy Bishop (Kannan x Cemeta) had one single time penalty over the two rounds.
Sweden started of extremely well in the first round; Malin Baryard-Johnsson, Helena Persson and Peder Fredricson all delivered clear rounds. Luck was not on the Swede’s side in the second round, and as poles fell so did their position on the score board. The Swedish team ended up third in the end with sixteen penalties.
Norway ended up fourth, after strong rounds from the veteran Stein Endresen. France was just behind in fifth position with only three riders on the team.
This should make it final; Switzerland is back in the Top League next year after the overall victory in the Promotional League. The overall scoring is not yet available from the FEI, but according to our own mathematics this should be the outcome. The second team that will be allowed to compete in the Top League in 2012 will have to win the final in Barcelona.
