Stars missing out on the European Championships

Thursday, 18 July 2013

Plot Blue, who was double clear in the Nations Cup in Falsterbo, won the GCT Grand Prix in Cannes and was third in the Preis von Nordrhein-Westfalen in Aachen, is not part of the German team. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson. One team after another get announced for the European Championships in Herning. Although the teams can boast of some serious horse power, and great riders - several stars will be missing out on the Europeans, for one reason or another.

The Dutch team will have to do without both London and Sterrehof's Tamino. Marc Houtzager's ride has a small injury - nothing bad - but he wouldn't be able to be in top medal form in time for the Europeans according to Gerco Schröder's ride London is in perfect shape, but is not available for the Championships. London's owner Ger Visser Jr says to that it was a difficult decision, but that the situation around the stable is uncertain and therefore they will chose shows were there are more prize money.

Big Star is another super star that will be greatly missed in Herning. Nick Skelton has together with the stallion's owners made the decision not to go to the Europeans, and instead put all efforts towards the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Nick and Big Star are committed to help Great Britain to stay in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Division 1 and to make sure that Great Britain will qualify for the Olympics in Rio. You can read the whole press release here.

Germany on the other hand has a luxury problem that prevents some of the stars to compete at the Europeans. And they for sure must be seen as one of the hottest teams when they can leave horses like Plot Blue and Bella Donna at home. Otto Becker for sure had a hard job when chosing his team members. The French team is missing one of their biggest medal candidates; Penelope Leprevost on Mylord Carthago Z, while Sweden's Malin Baryard-Johnsson will be missing out with her super star H&M Tornesch.

Even though we will be missing some of the absolute biggest stars in the sport, several other top pairs will be there and give their all competing for the medals!
