Harrie Smolders and Regina Z (Rex Z x Savoy Hanover) were unbeatable in Saturday night’s 1.55 Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy at the Longines Hong Kong Masters. The Dutch rider and the 14 year old mare were over a second faster in the jump-off than runner-ups Penelope Leprevost and Flora de Mariposa (For Pleasure x Power Light), stealing the win from the French rider who had to settle for second. Penelope really set the bar high tonight as first to go in the jump-off though, and it looked like it would be hard to beat her when she finished clear on a time of 41.11 seconds.
Three riders later Harrie rode a trademark blistering fast round though, not once putting on the brakes on Regina Z who looked unstoppable around the shortened track. As Harrie crossed the finish line after a race to the final oxer, he had shaved off 1.12 seconds on Penelope’s time. Even Bosty could not catch Harrie tonight, and had to settle for third after a proper attempt for the win on Castle Forbes Cosma (Couleur-Rubin x Peter Pan) – making sure that two of the top three riders were French in true Hong Kong Masters-tradition.
