Day 5 of the Horse of the Year show in Hastings New Zealand and the champions sashes are merrily decorating the Team McVean headquarters.
Last night the big class also incorporated a team competition between Australia and New Zealand. As usual there were a lot of starters but only one double clear, we had 3 horses in the class and our best finishing score was 9 faults. That earned Katie 6th place but Australia won the test match convincingly.
The Aussies are using this tour as a small step towards Europe were they head next to gear them selves towards the World Champs next year. Some of their horses are very quality and should fare well in Europe.
Yesterday I also watched the young riders and junior riders of the year classes... Very few clears as has been the norm all week- everyone has been struggling with the courses built by Leopoldo Palaccio, but the fact he is here and testing all the riders is a huge step in the right direction.
Last night was a VIP reception given by Land Rover, I got myself a VIP pass and went along for some bubbles and to meet folks... My two favourite pastimes...haha
First up I met a super Kiwi Olympic rower and even got to hold his gold medal from London.... Nice! Then there was the legendary Sir Mark Todd, followed by West Indies ex Fast Bowler Franklyn ARose.... I had a very interesting evening!
I was also introduced to the president of the FEI Oceania region (Australia , New Zealand , Pacific Islands etc) I do remember asking him to our truck for tea and buns on Sunday morning!! he is keen to promote Kiwi Equestrianism to the world.... And no better place than this page!
This morn ( Saturday ) we also won the 135 champs with Dunstan Zasjany this lovely little mare dashed round the course and was super fast and clean. There were only 3 in the jump off from a huge start list.
Today also sees the final of the world mounted games, teams from England, Wales France, Switzerland Australia USA and the host nation New Zealand have been thundering up and down the arenas all week in ponies. They aren't just kids there's adult men doing it and when they fall Ouch!! It hurts - the ground is pretty darn hard! ( there's been no rain for months)
On that point Helen and Emma shampoo all Katie's horses daily before they compete- the pens are so dusty. Hats off to the girls the horses look amazing every day and are in super order despite the heat.
Tonight we have the one star GP and I think our Super horse Springfield is up for that.. But right now the attention is going towards racing where the McVeans have a runner in a group One race anytime now so bye from me ...
