The WoSJ guest blogger from the Asian Games; Samantha Lam

Monday, 29 September 2014

Hi everybody,

The big day finally arrived! Team jumping at the Asian Games! 9 teams in total. There were originally ten teams but one horse failed the trot up from team India. Since they only had three on the team, this left them with 2 individuals. The Hong Kong horses all passed without any problems.

John Vallance designed a lovely course. The time was tight which resulted in quite a few time faults! After 2 rounds of jumping, team Qatar walked away with the gold medal finishing with 0 faults. Team Saudi Arabia won silver with 4 faults and bronze went to team Japan. Hong Kong ended up in 6th.

Adonis jumped really well. He was the most inexperienced horse on our team and seeing as he was only jumping 1.35 at the beginning of the year, I was very pleased with his performance. We jumped the first round with 5 faults and the second round with 4. My team mate Kenneth had an unfortunate fall in the second round after his horse got his foot stuck in the martingale at the third jump in the triple combination. Both horse and rider were okay, but it really put us at a disadvantage. I qualified for the individuals which takes place on Tuesday.

Today we had the trot up for the individual final. The three HK horse passed. I have Adonis a light ride today and he felt really good. Fresh and supple. He seems to enjoy bring in Korea! The team physio worked on him and he got to relax with the SWIT magnetic blanket again. We finished early at the stable a decided to go to Korean BBQ again.

We had an amazing lunch... We ate far too much but there is always room for ice cream!!! We stopped at a Baskin Robbins ice cream parlour for a couple of scoops!! I loved Baskin Robbins as a kid! A total blast from the past! It tasted as good as I remembered too!! After that we had a relaxing afternoon hanging out at the athletes village. An early night for me in preparation for tomorrow!

Best wishes

Samantha
