The WoSJ guest blogger from the European Championships in Herning; Scott Brash

Friday, 23 August 2013

Hi everyone,

My horse Hello Sanctos has jumped very well here at the European Championships. It was fantastic to be on top yesterday, and win the gold with the team! I was a little bit disappointed with my rail down, because I think we had a really good chance individually and now that has put me down a bit. I think I how a far less chance now, and it was something of nothing as he only touched it. So I was slightly disappointed at that – but at the same time very pleased that we could win another gold medal.

For sure it is a lot of pressure as anchor rider and last to go, but I kind of like that. It brings out the best in me, and makes me work harder. I think I need something like that to achieve my best. They said to me that I could be clear or have one down, so I knew I was not allowed to have a time fault or anything like that. I couldn’t believe that I had the fence down, but then I just thought that I better not have a time fault and it was good it all worked out.

We had a nice evening with the team last night, we went back to the hotel and our chief manager put on an amazing buffet for us. It was a very quiet night, with some really nice food.

Hello Sanctos has really been such a fantastic horse to me. When I ride him I like to let him come forward – and don’t interfere with him too much. He is such a careful horse and so consistent. For me he is a dream to ride!  It’s like with all horses; you need that good partnership and I think when you get that with a horse and understand your horse 100 % it will also understand you and that brings out the best in both horse and rider.

I think the course will be tough tomorrow, but that should be expected with the caliber on the horses and the riders here – it is fantastic. There are some horses that have been jumping unbelievable here, and some horses have not even had a fence down yet. I can see one or two horses going through the championships without a rail down. I think Ben is flying, and his horse has looked really, really good all week. I really hope he can get a medal, because he has done a fantastic job so far. So – hopefully Ben stays clean and no one can beat him. I can also see Daniel Deusser winning a medal, and I think Ludger is knocking on the door and then there is Casall that has been jumping well.

There are some really top horse and rider combinations up there. I am on 6.72 which you usually would think not would be far away – but I think even if I jump double clear I am not going to win a medal. It’s that good of competition here, and I think it’s been a great championship. There will be some great jumping tomorrow!

Scott
