It was all about Britain at Hickstead in Friday’s Bunn Leisure International Stakes as William Whitaker won, William Funnell ended second and Michael Whitaker was third. Michael Whitaker took an early lead on Eros H (Emilion x Saygon) with a clear round over the twelve fence 1.50 track that included two combinations, stopping the clock at 70.89 seconds. About half way in the class it was Shane Breen – who has his base here at Hickstead – that that came close to pushing Michael down riding Ominerale Courcelle (Kannan x Caprice d’Elle) to a time of 67.17 seconds, but with one down Shane eventually ended fourth.
With only seven riders to go, William Funnell entered the ring on Billy Balou (Cevin Z x Vectha) – riding a blistering fast round to cross the finish line at 70.22 seconds to take over the lead. It was not to last though as William Whitaker went to work two riders later – going all in on Upperclass and shaving off 1.77 seconds on Funnel’s time, and securing triple British on top.
