The Trofeo Cepsa in Madrid – a 1.50 class with a jump-off – was won by Maikel van der Vleuten on VDL Groep Sapphire B. Fifteen of the 42 riders in the class moved on to the jump-off, to create an entertaining second round. Nick Skelton and his spectacular KWPN stallion Big Star (Quick Star x Nimmerdor) opened the jump-off and set up a blistering pace around the track. Nick turned this big-jumping eight year old on the inside to the last oxer, and really put pressure on the other riders with his time of 40.03.
It was not until Marco Kutscher came in that Nick was pushed down. The German rider put Allerdings (Arpeggio x Diamantino) into top gear from the beginning and despite the gelding stumbling in the turn on the way to the last fence, Marco bettered Nick’s time.
Maikel van der Vleuten was next and quickly showed that he meant business. A super fast round on VDL Groep Sapphire B (Mr. Blue x Grand Veneur) and an inside turn to the last oxer gave Maikel the lead when he crossed the finish line on 39.44. Spanish rider Sergio Alvares Moya and Kisby (Kaiserwind x Lohberg) managed to squeeze in between Maikel and Marco with a time of 40.02, much to the pleasure of the home crowd!
