Basel’s 5* Grand Prix was won by a rider that over the past year has showed that he can be counted with; Billy Twomey - the best Irish rider at the moment – won aboard his WEG-partner Tinka’s Serenade (Tinka’s Boy x African Drum). Twomey had a really good season in 2010; he was on the winning Irish team in Aachen and was the best Irish rider at the WEG finishing as number 13 individually. The 33 year old rider has also climbed the world rankings over the past year, and is now ranked as number seven in the world. His success has now continued into 2011.
Twomey was 0.30 seconds ahead of German rider Marcus Ehning, who also was clear on 39.89 in the second round aboard Noltes Küchengirl. Luciana Diniz was third in As Taro. Sixteen out of 46 riders went through to the second round of the class.
Afterwards a thrilled Billy Twomey said: "I'm delighted with today's performance. It's nice to get one in the bag with Tinka's Serenade. We've been knocking on the door for quite a while, with top five places, and it was really great today to finally get one in. I'd like to thank my staff and my owners and everyone else who helps keep the horse on the road."
Albert Zoer won Sunday’s 1.45 class on Uraguay (Nairobi x Colino).
Simon Delestre was leading rider of the 5* show in Basel.
