Thursday’s opening 1.45 speed class in Barcelona went to Colombia and Rene Lopez, riding Polissonne Des Neyes. Coming in as number four to go in the 73 rider-class, which many of the riders used to school their Nations Cup horses, Rene rode a blistering clear and fast round at 53.53 seconds to take the lead and stay there. Runner-up was Pius Schwizer on Coolgirl, on a time of 55.40 while Alvaro de Miranda ended third on AD Norson, fractions behind Pius on 55.63 seconds.
In the 1.50 class it was Ireland’s hugely talented Bertram Allen that yet again impressed. Riding the lovely Molly Malone, the 18 year old Allen did what seemed undoable and beat McLain Ward who had produced an extremely fast round on Zander as number 24 to go in this long class that counted almost 70 riders. Shaving off almost two seconds on Ward’s time, Allen took home the win. Third went to Brazil and Ashford Farm’s Marlon Zanotelli on Clintash, also he clear on a time of 67.28 seconds.
