William Whitaker and Upperclass. Photo by Jenny Abrahamsson.Friday's 1,60 m class at Spruce Meadows - the Tourmaline Oil Cup - turned out to be a difficult one. Faults were spread out all over the thirteen fences track and only five horses out of 50 managed to jump a clear round. Two of these horses were ridden by German rider Daniel Deusser.
Daniel was the first rider to go in to the jump-off, riding Fyloe vh Claeyssenhof (Burggraaf x Heartbreaker). Daniel started off really well. but ended up having the two last fences down - a narrow vertical and a wide oxer that were new for the jump-off.
Next to go was William Whitaker with the 13 year old Upperclass (Concorde x Indoctro). The British rider did a beautiful clear round in 46,010 seconds which put some pressure on the ones to follow. Marc Houtzager tried his best to catch William's time riding Sterrehof's Uppity (Guidam x Epilot), but didn't quite make it and went in second with his 46,635 seconds.
After the Dutch rider it was a little bit of a wait for Daniel to get ready with his second horse, First Class van't Ecckelghem (Balou du Rouet x Quidam de Revel). Even this time aroud Daniel had to see the top pole of the narrow vertical at the end of the course touch the ground.
Last out were yesterday's winners Lauren Hough and Ohlala (Orlando x Cardento). Today their round was not fast enough for the first place so the American rider had to settle for third.
