In this WoSJ Close Up we focus on a true title-collector that has had a fantastic 2014. Meet VDL Groep Verdi TN N.O.P. All photos by Jenny Abrahamsson.
An explanation of his name: VDL Groep = sponsor, Verdi = name, TN = one of the owners Team Nijhof and N.O.P. = Nederlands Olympiade Paard. Verdi was born in 9th of May in 2002 and originally got the name Vanquidam M. Verdi is by the legendary sire Quidam de Revel, and out of the mare Clarissa by Landgraf I. Verdi was bred by Stoeterji Musterd in the Netherlands. Maikel has been riding Verdi since he was a four year old. "On Verdi the scope was always there, and he was very careful and had a very good mind as well. Most of the qualities you can see in him now he also had as a young horse,“ Maikel has told World of Showjumping. Verdi is owned by Stal vd Vleuten, Team Nijhof and Kees vd Oetelaar. This year Verdi won the team gold at the World Championships in Normandy.
He also has a team silver medal from the 2012 Olympics in London.
"Verdi and I have a strong bond," Maikel says of being Verdi's rider the last eight years. "When you develop the horses yourself like that, you know them inside out.“ Verdi has also jumped two European Championships and two World Cup Finals. He was also on the winning Dutch team in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup team in the Final in Barcelona, and jumped a double clear round. Verdi won this year’s CSI5* Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix in Madrid.
Last year Verdi won the CSI5* Longines Grand Prix in Lyon, as well as the CSIO5* Grand Prix in Al Ain.
