On the first day of the Europeans WoSJ brings you Dietmar Gugler’s expert comment on the championship so far.
On the course: “When we walked the course it looked quite careful, and the impression was that the riders would catch faults here and there. In the end it turned out to be a bit easy for the horse and rider material present here in Madrid. But, that will make it all the more interesting tomorrow.”
On the importance of the first day: “The important rounds are to be ridden tomorrow, Friday and Sunday – the best need to produce clear rounds. But in the end when we come to Sunday, today’s table C could come back and haunt the riders.”
On the teams: “The riders on the Swedish team rode well, and have a good team. But they still need luck; if it’s on their side they can be in the top. I also think Germany, France, Great Britain and Holland looked strong. It’s all close though, and it’s a battle for those who need to qualify for the Olympics. It all depends on the team competition tomorrow andFriday though; everything will play out then. It’s fractions separating the teams now.”
On the individual riders: “”I though some of the Germans looked strong; like Carsten-Otto and Marco. I think Rolf looked strong for Sweden as well, but it’s always hard to say. Beat is always good; sometimes you don’t really see the riders throughout the year, and then they bounce back for the championship.”
