Belgium’s Philip Gysbrechts combines his job as osteopath with his riding career, and focuses on producing young horses up to international level. As an osteopath, Gysbrechts treats many horses with all kinds of problems – and according to the Belgian specialist many of them are caused by pain in the stomach. Gysbrechts does not only use Equine 74 Gastric on his own horses, but he also recommends it to his clients.

“My main profession is osteopathy, and I work as an osteopath from Monday till Wednesday. During the rest of the week, I ride the horses, mostly from our own breeding,” Philip Gysbrechts explains. According to Gysbrechts, many sport horses suffer from stomach problems. “First of all, the digestive system of a horse is not made to get food in only a few portions a day. In nature, horses eat for sixteen hours a day. The way of feeding is totally different, so this can cause stomach problems. Secondly, a horse is an animal that tends to flee – so a horse is very sensitive to stress. With all the long travels, exciting indoor shows, enthusiastic crowds, applause, noises, et cetera, a horse can get pretty stressed. So that is a second factor to cause stomach problems with horses.”

“As an osteopath, I treat many horses with problems such as pain in their upper line. In my vision, I see that problems in the stomach indirectly can cause pain in the back as well. As we take a look at the vertebral column, we see that the sympathetic innervation of the stomach – and liver – is mostly localized at the vertebrae of the withers. When a horse has problems in the stomach, such as inflammation or even ulcers, this communicates through the nerves in the withers towards the brain. When a horse has these problems, the sympathetic nervous activities in the autonomic nervous system increase. Because of that the tension on the muscles increases too, and the sensitivity of the withers rises as well. When the withers become more sensitive and a saddle and weight press on them while riding, the pain causes the back to become more hollow which again leads to other problems,” Gysbrechts states about the relation between stomach and back problems.

Philip Gysbrechts has been using and advising Equine 74 Gastric and the results have already been very good. “Normally, when I thought a horse of a client would have a problem like this I would recommend a treatment with omeprazole. Recently, I recommended to use Equine 74 Gastric to some clients and the first results have been spectacular. One client used Equine 74 Gastric for six weeks on a horse with very serious stomach problems and the pain seems to be gone completely.”

As a rider, Philip Gysbrechts focuses mainly on producing young horses. “You have to teach everything to young horses, and what you introduce is new for them. Until the age of three or four, they stay out in the field and eat grass or hay all day. And then all of a sudden they are trained, ridden, go to shows, et cetera. This can all cause stress, and as it is better to prevent stomach problems than to cure them Equine 74 Gastric is an excellent product to use as a maintenance of the stomach. It is very important to take constantly care of the horses’ stomachs,” Gysbrechts concludes.
