Germany's former world number one Daniel Deusser and the 10-year-old Otello de Guldenboom (Tobago Z x Caretino) won Friday's CSI5* 1.55m presented by Vector at Club Hipico La Silla in Monterrey, Mexico.
Counting for the Longines Rankings Group A, the 1.55m class saw seven horse-and-rider combinations from the 38 at start deliver a clear over the course set by Anthony D'Ambrosio (USA).
In the jump-off, the top five produced another clear, with Deusser and Otello de Guldenboom taking the win in a time of 39.63, followed by Erynn Ballard (CAN) and De Flor 111 Santa Rosa Z (Der Senaat 111 x Action Breaker) in second in 40.30 and the hosts' own Carlos Hank Guerreiro on H5 Porthos Maestro Wh Z (Picasso Z x Ogano Sitte) in third in 40.94.
"Winning today is something that makes me proud, and it shows me that he's learning and that he wants to do it,” Deusser said in a press release from Major League Show Jumping. "Compared to Erynn's horse, I think my horse is naturally a little faster and maybe that was what made up the second that I was in front of her."
Speaking about the venue in Monterrey, Deusser said: "I've heard a lot about La Silla—even during my childhood—and it was already a famous show. I've unfortunately never been here, so arriving here two days ago, it was impressive to see. I hope it's not my last time here."
Conor Swail (IRL) and Theo 160 (Christian 25 x Calando IV) finished fourth after clocking a time of 41.07, followed by Jos Verlooy (BEL) and Origi (VIgo d'Arsouilles x Karioka Del Follee) in fifth in 42.19.
