Home hero Julien Epaillard and the 12-year-old gelding Usual Suspect d'Auge (Jarnac x Papillon Rouge) won Saturday's feature class at Hubside Jumping in Grimaud, France – the 1.45m with a jump-off counting for the Longines Ranking. Epaillard was 0.32 seconds ahead of Brazil's Marlon Modolo Zanotelli on Icarus (Douglas x Sioux de Baugy), while Germany's Christian Kukuk followed in third with Botaro (Balou du Rouet x Gralshueter).
"As for Usual Suspect, I have dropped him a little in the classes," Epaillard explained. "He did the CSI4* Grand Prix a fortnight ago and we had a little incident as he left a stride out before an oxer. Last weekend, I jumped him in the small classes to restore his confidence. On Thursday, he jumped a 1.40m and I found him quite relaxed – he had forgotten our mishap a little. Today, he did a magnificent first round and was very relaxed – he felt great!"
Later in the day, Italy's Emanuele Gaudiano and Nikolaj de Music (Kannan x Nabab de Reve) topped the 1.50m against the clock. The pair was 0.23 seconds faster than Germany's Marcus Ehning and Cristy (Canturo x Landlord). In third place followed home rider Simon Delestre on Uccello de Will (Marlou des Etisses x Marlon) – 0.04 behind Ehning.
