Belgium's Olivier Philippaerts and the 9-year-old Poppemieke JW van Moerhoeve (Vigo d'Arsouilles x Diamant de Semilly) won Friday's CSI4* 1.50m Grand Prix qualifier at Longines Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands.
Crossing the finish line in 61.67 seconds, the Belgian rider took the win in the class that also counted for the Longines Ranking Group D, followed by the host nation's Leopold van Asten (NED) and VDL Groep Nino du Roton (Iron Man van de Padenborre x Codex) in second in 62.64 and Rik Hemeryck (BEL) aboard Navarro van het Eelshof (Jappeloup vh Dauwhof x Poleander) in third in 64.39. Gerben Morsink (NED) and Navarone Z (Nabab de Reve x Amor) finished fourth with a time of 64.96, while Marc Houtzager (NED) aboard Sterrehof's Calimero (Quidam de Revel x Bollvorm's Libero H) completed the top five after stopping the clock on 65.49.
"My mare felt very good today," Philippaerts said in a press release from Longines Tops International Arena. "I didn't have a chance to watch any of the others go before me, but I knew they were quick. I was able to keep my forward rhythm and take the first distance off each turn. The grass here in Valkenswaard is brilliant - the underlayer of sand keeps the horses very balanced, and supported. I couldn't be more pleased and now I look ahead to Sunday's Grand Prix with this mare."
