Sweden's Peder Fredricson and the 16-year-old gelding Catch Me Not S (Cardento 933 x Ramiro's Son) won Sunday's CSI5* 1.60m €500,000 Rolex Grand Prix presented by Audi at the Brussels Stephex Masters in Belgium.

It was filled to the brim with spectators around the new grass arena at Stephex Stables, as a weekend of top sport concluded with the prestigious Rolex Grand Prix. From the 44 horse-and-rider-combinations at start, only seven pairs cleared the track set by the French course designer Gregory Bodo. While the faults were many and spread out over the 14-fence course, poles in the Audi vertical-oxer combination at fence number six and the Rolex oxer-vertical-vertical triple combination at fence number nine fell over and over again, as did the golden liverpool at fence number eleven.

Latvia's Kristaps Neretnieks and Valour (Verdi TN x Calido) posted the first clear round of the Grand Prix and was joined in the jump-off by Harrie Smolders (NED) on Uricas vd Kattevennen (Uriko x San Patrignano Cassini), Eduardo Pereira De Menezes (BRA) on H5 Chaganus (Chacco-Blue x Carthago), Denis Lynch (IRL) on Brooklyn Heights (Nabab de Reve x For Pleasure), Nicolas Pizarro (MEX) on Oak Grove's Enkidu (Ensor Vdh Pleville x Quidam de Revel), Steve Guerdat (SUI) on Dynamix de Belheme (Snaike de Blondel x Cornet Obolensky) and Peder Fredricson on Catch Me Not S.

When Eduardo Pereira De Menezes and H5 Chaganus crossed the finish line of the jump-off in 32.91 seconds, it seemed the win would go to Brazil – but Fredricson and Catch Me Not S managed to shave fractions off the leading time, stopping the clock on 32.61 – taking the win and pushing Menezes to the runner-up position. Smolders and the impressive Uricas vd Kattevennen completed the podium to finish third, while Lynch and Brooklyn Heighths took the fourth place and Nicolas Pizarro on Oak Grove's Enkidu fifth.

"Catch Me Not S is in great shape," Fredricson said about his 16-year-old winning mount. "I had him as my second choice for the World Championship in Herning, so I took it fairly slowly with him this year, just to build him up for the World Championship. When All In went there instead, Cath Me Not had a few weeks of rest and now he is in really good shape."

Speaking about the venue and the work the team at Stephex has put in, Fredricson said: "Nothing beats a really good grass arena, it just gives this extra atmosphere to a show, I think. This show has a very special atmosphere, and with the audience, they have done something really special here and we are grateful for it."

"For me, just being here is a dream come true," second placed Eduardo Pereira De Menezes commented. "To be able to compete against these guys and to perform, is fantastic. I made a mistake coming down from the double, my horse jumped a little bit to the right and then the distance to the next vertical was really flat," he explained about his jump-off. "The turn after that was difficult, I lost a couple of strides in that turn. My horse is really, really fast on the ground, and I know Peder did the same strides on the lines as me, but it was really close, so I think if I had done a better job in the turn there, I would have had a chance to win."

Third placed Harrie Smolders was full of praise for his horse, the 10-year-old Uricas vd Kattevennen. "Uricas is one of my two upcoming horses that I was riding here this week," he said. "I think they are both really starting to step up, and for Uricas, this was the first time he did a big occasion and he delivered straight away, so I am very pleased. I have had Uricas for a year and a half, I took my time with him, we went step by step and I thought he was ready now; and it paid off."

"I want to mention that we have to be very grateful to the Stephex Group, Rolex and Audi, that they give us such a venue to show the skills of our horses," Smolders continued. "If you combine that with the audience that is here today, I think it makes these moments truly special."
